A perfectly layered bed looks beautiful, but it should also feel like home—inviting, comfortable and effortlessly pulled together. At Saybrook Home, the design team thinks of the bed as the centerpiece of the bedroom, and each layer is chosen with both style and comfort in mind.

Start with your foundation
Begin with high-quality flat and fitted sheets that feel wonderful against the skin. Opt for smooth percale or silky sateen in a soft neutral; this creates a quiet backdrop that lets your top layers and textures shine. A snug, well-fitted sheet keeps everything looking tailored and ensures the rest of your bedding drapes cleanly over the mattress.
Add a textural mid layer
Next comes a blanket, coverlet or matelassé spread layered over your sheets. A coverlet is a lightweight bedspread that adds visual polish and a finished edge, while a blanket introduces extra warmth and a cozier hand. Matelassé offers a distinctive woven pattern and texture, giving the bed subtle dimension even when you prefer a tone-on-tone palette.
Elevate with a duvet
Your duvet cover and insert create the plush, cloud-like volume that signals luxury hotel comfort. The design team recommends a duvet insert with baffle-box construction and corner loops so it stays evenly fluffed and anchored inside the cover. Fold the duvet back at the head of the bed or drape it so it “kisses” the floor at the foot for a relaxed yet intentional designer finish.
Style the pillows like a pro
Pillows are where function meets decoration, and the arrangement matters. Start with euro shams (typically 26" x 26") standing tall against the headboard to create height and a soft backdrop. In front of those, layer your sleeping pillows in pillowcases or shams, then add boudoir or lumbar pillows and a couple of accent throws for color, pattern, and personality. Finish with a thoughtful throw
A decorative throw at the foot of the bed is the final, effortless-looking layer that ties the whole story together. Choose a throw that either gently contrasts your duvet and coverlet or picks up a key accent color from your pillows for a cohesive, curated feel. Casually folded or loosely draped, it adds a lived-in warmth that captures Saybrook Home’s signature blend of comfort and style.
