Common Window Treatment Mishaps

Common Window Treatment Mishaps

When it comes to styling a room, few elements pull a space together quite like beautiful, well-fitted drapery. Thoughtful window treatments add height, texture and softness, transforming a room from unfinished to intentionally designed. But even the most stunning fabric can fall flat if a few key details are missed. Here are four of the most common drapery mistakes—and how to easily fix them.

One of the quickest ways to make a room feel smaller is by hanging curtains right above the window frame. When rods are installed too low, ceilings appear shorter and the room loses its visual balance.

The Fix:
Mount the rod higher—ideally midway between the top of the window frame and the ceiling (or even just below the ceiling for added drama). This draws the eye upward and creates the illusion of taller windows and more expansive space.

Short curtains can make windows look chopped and out of proportion. They should either kiss the floor or break slightly, much like a tailored pair of trousers.

The Fix:
When measuring for drapery, start from where your rod will be installed (not the top of the window frame) and measure down to the floor. Add an extra inch or two if you prefer a subtle puddle for a romantic effect.

Sparse curtains can make your windows look skimpy and underwhelming, especially if they can’t fully close without looking stretched.

The Fix:
A good rule of thumb is to use panels that total at least two to two-and-a-half times the widthof your window for a full, luxurious look. For wide windows or sliding doors, multiple panels can create beautiful dimension and functional flexibility.

Too often, drapery is chosen at the end of the design process as a quick finishing touch. But window treatments play a major role in framing the light, texture, and overall style of a room.

The Fix:
Consider your drapery early on—during furniture planning, not after. Think about the color palette, fabric weight, and how you want the light to interact with your space. Coordinating drapery with rugs, upholstery, or wallpaper creates a cohesive, layered design that feels intentional from every angle.

At Saybrook Home, our designers love helping clients choose drapery that feels perfectly proportioned and beautifully made—adding that final layer of warmth and polish.
