Mixing Old and New for a Unique Look

One of the best parts about living in New England, is its ubiquitous historical charm.  It's become a hallmark of our region and has provided endless inspiration for interior design throughout the years. If you're looking to create a unique look, incorporating vintage and antique pieces is a great way to do it and often enhances the look and style of other furniture pieces in your home.

We recently had the pleasure of helping the owner of Smith Farm Gardens in East Haddam, CT, style the inside of the property's latest addition - a carriage guest house. The goal was to create a fresh, updated space, while still paying homage to the farm's long history. The result was pure magic!

Here are some tips for mixing the old with the new, along with some inspiration from our recent visit to Smith Farm Gardens.

1. Start with a Neutral Base

A neutral color palette provides a versatile foundation for incorporating both vintage and modern pieces. This will help to balance the visual interest created by the contrasting styles. At Smith Farm Gardens, we started with an Oushak area rug in soft, muted tones.

2. Choose a Focal Point

Select a standout piece, whether it's a vintage armchair, a modern chandelier or a bold piece of artwork. This focal point will draw attention and set the tone for the rest of the room.

3. Balance the Scales

To create a cohesive look, ensure that your vintage and modern pieces complement each other in terms of scale. For example, the carriage house features a large antique wooden cart perched in the loft adjacent to the kitchen shelving. Visually, this juxtoposition of large scale and small is perfect.

4. Less is More

When blending vintage and modern elements, it's important to avoid clutter. Too many pieces can overwhelm the space and make it feel chaotic. Focus on selecting a few key pieces that complement each other and create a sense of balance.

5. Personalize Your Space

The most important thing is to create a space that reflects your personal style. Incorporate items that have sentimental value or that simply make you happy. Your home should be a reflection of who you are.

By following these tips, you can create a stylish and inviting home that blends vintage and modern elements seamlessly. Remember, the key is to have fun and experiment with different combinations until you find a style that resonates with you.
