10 Ways to Create a Cozy Bedroom

10 Ways to Create a Cozy Bedroom

Your bedroom should be the ultimate space for rest and retreat in your home. Have you been wanting to transform your bedroom into a cozy oasis but weren’t sure where to start? Here are 10 easy ways to update your primary bedroom for maximum comfort.

Embrace Scent

Nothing sets the scene better for relaxation and a homey atmosphere quite like the soothing scents of a candle. The right candle can set the mood for your space and up the cozy factor when lit. Our Saybrook Home candles come in five different scents, each with its own unique fragrance profile.

If you’re apprehensive about the hazards of a real flame, we have some excellent alternatives such as scented room diffusers and sachets. Our favorite brands include Masion Berger Paris - our favorite floral scents include Precious Jasmine and Lemon Flower. For a coastal scent, try the Inis Scented Sachet or the Home and Linen Mist.

Layer Up

Another way to make your bedroom feel more inviting is by layering your bedding. After dressing the bed with sheets, layer a coverlet, down comforters in a duvet, quilts and throw blankets for the look of a bed you just want to collapse into at the end of a long day. For throws, pick something seasonal that moonlights as decor to match your holiday accents. Or, go for a more permanent look with a luxe fabric like cashmere.

Keep Your Bed at the Right Temperature

Everyone prefers a different sleeping temperature. Maximizing comfort starts begins with recognizing what type of sleeper you are and identifying what that means when it comes to making the bed.  Temperature is especially relevant to choosing sheets and comforters, which come in a variety of weights. Comfort and seasonality should always be taken into account. High quality sheets also make a huge difference in your sleep and last longer after washing.

Our Saybrook Home luxury bedding collection features long-staple cotton sheeting, which is not only very durable, but breathable for heat regulation.

Add Soft Textiles

As you scout for bedding, aim to fill the rest of your bedroom oasis with textiles that you’ll also want to touch. Think soft fabrics like wool, boucle, leather and velvet. Texture adds depth, dimension and interest. Drapes are another way to bring this tactile element into play. Shades and blinds add practicality, but don’t be afraid to then layer with a drape to complete the look. You can weave soft fibers into every corner of your room from furniture to rugs and accessories.

Consider Rug Materials and Placement

No matter what material your floor is, one way to make the space softer and more inviting is by layering a rug over top. Even if you have wall to wall carpeting, dropping down a rug is a surefire way to make the space more inviting. If you opt to put a rug underneath the bed, the standard rule of thumb is to leave 3 feet exposed on each side. A cozy handknotted Morrocan rug will never leave your feet cold when climbing out of bed. If you’re looking to spend a little less, adding a runner to both sides of the bed is a clever budget-friendly solution.

Adjust Your Lighting

Never underestimate the effect of lighting on mood in a space. For a bedroom, avoid having only one light source and try layering your lighting instead. Make sure all your bases are covered by having lighting from each of these categories: task, ambient and accent. Task lighting is illumination for a specific space in your room, such as a desk lamp. Ambient lighting creates a unified lighting level, and accent lighting would be to highlight a very specific object or space, such as a light hanging above artwork. Eco-friendly dimmable light bulbs are also a great way to control the amount of light in your room, creating coziness while also reducing your energy bills!

Florals

Regardless of whether you have a green thumb or not, florals are a great way to add texture and interest and give your space a fresh take. If you have the right lighting, go for a real plant. Some have the added benefit of a fresh fragrance. Faux trees, grasses and plants are also great options that require no maintenance. We have a variety of types and sizes at our Glastonbury and Old Saybrook showrooms for you to choose from.

Pillows: Why stop at just two?

The coziest bed looks as good as it feels. Layer your pillows as you layer your blankets. Consider euros or a long body pillow against the headboard, followed by sleeping pillows, throws and even a bolster pillow to top it off. When it comes to decorative options, throw pillows can create interest and serve to tie the room’s color scheme together. Swap them out for an inexpensive way to seasonally update the look of your room.

Get a Headboard and a Footboard

Let’s be honest, there’s nothing inviting about a mattress against a wall. Headboards and footboards create a bed you climb into and give a sense of security. And, we all want the place we retreat to at the end of the day to be where we feel the safest and more comfortable.

Make it Personal

Don’t put too much stock in the current trends or Instagram influencers’ picks, the most important part about your retreat, is that it’s a reflection of YOU! You want a space that is full of the happiest memories. Incorporate your favorite books, photos of a vacation to Paris, a family heirloom dresser or a special piece of art. Nostalgic pieces make our rooms and our hearts feel cozy. Don’t be afraid to make it personal!
