Saybrook Coastal Elegance

Comfortable, Coastal Elegance – client requested, designer delivered.

Senior Designer, Jackie O’Neil, just completed a beautiful weekend home in Old Saybrook, CT for a prominent NYC couple.  Attorneys Nancy and Bill Mitchell sought out the perfect weekend respite from the busy days and nights working in New York City and Chicago.  Their choice, Old Saybrook, CT, which ultimately led them to the local interior design services and senior designer at Saybrook Home.  The couple wanted a local designer that they could work with remotely to ease the burden of furnishing an entire home.  Jackie embraced the client’s desire to enhance the waterfront views, occasionally adding tasteful pops of accent colors throughout the coastal retreat.  “The whole process was stress free, convenient and really fun,” says Mitchell.

From the Customer:

What attracted you to Old Saybrook and the Coastline of CT? I work in NYC so we were looking for a place for weekends that was close enough but that did not feel like the city. Old Saybrook fit that criteria. In addition, the proximity to Boston and Hartford was also nice. We wanted to be right on the water and we wanted a small town feel. Old Saybrook also fit those criteria.

Why did you choose to work with a designer from Saybrook Home? Since this was an additional home, we did not have furniture so we had to furnish the entire house. We did some research and decided it was too much to do on our own remotely. We googled designers in the area and found Saybrook Home. The pricing was good, the furniture was good quality, and the designers seemed very talented. It was a low stress, convenient way to accomplish a big task.

How did you and Jackie begin working together? What was it about Jackie that made you feel comfortable working with her? I reviewed the designer portfolios online and really liked Jackie’s style. I was looking for comfortable but also some coastal elegance. She clearly got that aesthetic. When we met Jackie, we just really liked her. First, she clearly knows what she is doing. Second, she really listened to what I wanted (and also what my husband wanted) and put that together in a way that was better than I envisioned. Finally, she was fun.

What was the aesthetic that you wanted to achieve when decorating your house? Coastal elegance, but comfortable. The house is all about the water views so the decor needed to enhance that.

What is your favorite room in your new house? Two of them: the main room and the upstairs living room. Both are beautiful, comfortable and with a touch of fun. And the family loves being in them together.

If there is one thing that you wish everyone could know about your experience with Jackie, what would it be? I was actually sorry when it ended. The whole process was stress free, convenient and really fun.

From the Designer:

I enjoyed working with Nancy very much and loved that she wasn’t afraid of color and vibrant prints. Nancy was super receptive, appreciated and trusted my design capabilities. I had to be space sensitive to the second level living room and bedrooms. The spaces are a bit on the smaller side, but luckily I had the perfect scale sectional to offer and we utilized using Iron bed which gave a more airy look to the bedrooms.

This project is very similar to several I am presently working on. These specific projects involve starting with a clean slate and require many finishing touches, accessorizing and enhancing the various spaces so it feels like home to my clients. Accessorizing is my forte and one of my favorite parts of the entire process.

My favorite room in Nancy and Bill’s home is the Living/Dining space. The space is inviting, cozy and relaxing as the colors are calming and draw you in. This particular space overlooks the water and many times reflects similar tones to the fabrics we chose inside, especially at early dusk. The live edge dining table enhances the nature of the view as well.

All the furniture and decorating you see in these photos was designed by our very own Jackie O.
