Glastonbury Oasis

A Fresh, New Start: the Glastonbury oasis

Senior Designer, Debbie Grote, just completed a beautiful new home in Glastonbury, CT for Katie and her three kids. After a difficult year, Katie was faced with the task of furnishing a brand new, empty home and didn’t know where to begin. Luckily, after growing up on the shoreline and knowing about Saybrook Home, she was able to team up with Debbie to not only get the job done but to make her new house look and feel like home. “She made a very overwhelming task, not only manageable but fun,” says Katie.

From the Customer:

How did you hear of Saybrook Home? I grew up along the Connecticut Shoreline and have driven by the store thousands of times but never went in. I was drawn in by the idea of a one-stop shopping experience for everything I needed. I also loved the idea of a locally owned family business.

Why did you choose to work with a designer from Saybrook Home? This past year has been one tremendous upheaval and transition for my family and me. Moving from the house I built and made a home with my ex-husband, buying a new home, physically moving mine and my children’s belongings on top of having to furnish an empty house was a daunting task. Working with a designer helped make a very stressful and overwhelming situation, a fun and creative outlet for expression for not only myself but also my children and my mother so that every one of us was contributing to a fresh start.

How did you and Debbie begin working together? What was it about Debbie that made you feel comfortable working with her? Debbie approached my mother and I as we made our way through the store. There is so much to see and I was essentially furnishing an empty house but didn’t know where to begin. Debbie was very approachable and helped me prioritize my needs in a systematic fashion. Debbie came to my house so we could decide which rooms were the most important and established a map of the open spaces. She helped me focus my attention on necessities and even taught me how to make my new home feel like home.

What was the aesthetic that you wanted to achieve when decorating your house? I wanted a comfortable, homey atmosphere. A place where I would feel comfortable hosting a holiday party or playing board games with my children. I love soft, warm, calming colors so I was drawn to 3 area rugs and decorated the rooms around them. Saybrook Home was the perfect shopping space for my desired country-casual look.

What is your favorite room in your new house? My favorite space is the family room. It’s warm, cozy and comfortable as well as beautifully functional. It’s the perfect gathering space for friends and family.

If there is one thing that you wish everyone could know about your experience with Debbie, what would it be? I love Debbie’s positive energy, enthusiasm and creativity. She made a very overwhelming task, not only manageable but fun.

From the Designer:

It was an absolute joy to work with Katie and her family!  The Glastonbury Oasis project took us through the entire home, so it was especially important to create an even and flowing transition from space to space.  It was also imperative to allow her children to choose their bedroom spaces, each with their own stamp and flair.

The living/dining areas turned out to be such a calm and inviting space.  One large open area of neutrals, reds, and blues with natural beamed ceilings, made for a warm and cozy family room.  Starting from scratch allowed me to create a natural feeling, overlooking the terraced landscape in the back yard.  The inside living area became an extension of the outdoors.

Katie brought in many touches of her own, making their house a home.  We finished off by accessorizing a few key areas, with wall prints, planters, lamps, and floral arrangements.   I feel very fortunate to have connected so well with my client, her family, and their environment…

Our very own Debbie designed the furniture and decor you see in these photos of our Glastonbury Oasis project.
