    Curated Creators: Lee Industries
    March 25, 2021

At Saybrook Home, we take pride in curating high-end, reputable vendors to provide you with the best furniture and decor products for your home. We continuously search high and low for new creators and stay up-to-date on our current vendors to curate hand-made, durable, and customizable pieces so you can leave our store confident and excited with your purchases.

Our 42,000 sq ft showroom space has everything you need for your home, fashion, and lifestyle.

In 1969, Bill and Dottie Coley opened a 7500 square foot factory in Newton, North Carolina, hired 10 people, and began crafting wood-framed upholstery pieces. In 1972 Chic Robinson joined the team as Executive Vice President in charge of financial, production, and administrative functions and helped propel LEE to a new level. From that humble beginning, LEE has expanded to four manufacturing plants and has grown to be a leader and innovator in environmentally friendly manufacturing practices.

As their company … and their family … grew, LEE expanded their product offering to include leather, machine washable slipcovers, exclusive designer collections, outdoor furniture, and the naturalLEE line of products.

LEE knows that a healthy community is the best way to support healthy manufacturing. In 2014, LEE introduced their LEE Loves Local campaign, a program that encourages communities to shop their local retailer and showcases artisans and small shop owners in the same community.

That same year, LEE celebrated the revitalization of downtown Conover, North Carolina, recapturing an abandoned furniture facility to create new corporate offices and manufacturing space for LEE in the heart of this small southern town.

As LEE approaches its 50th anniversary, it will continue to focus on the people, the products, and the practices that have proven successful over the years. LEE knows that there is nothing more valuable than a satisfied customer and enduring loyalty. LEE’s quality and craftsmanship will continue to draw fans for years to come.

As new technology has progressed and as new products are made available, LEE has made the effort to incorporate them into the manufacturing process. In 2006, LEE introduced naturalLEE, an option in upholstery that features soy-based cushions, fibers made from recycled plastic, organic fabrics for upholstery, and wood panels certified by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative). With the program’s success and with LEE’s commitment to the environment, the benefits and components of naturalLEE have been made standard on all LEE products.

Sustainability for LEE means making responsible choices today that will impact our future. How does LEE do this?

      • LEE has donated over 142,515 trees to American Forests through sales of naturalLEE.
      • The features of naturalLEE save 64 gallons of crude oil per day -this equals 28 trips around the world in one year!
      • Just one back cushion uses 116 recycled plastic bottles.
      • Over 95% of all manufacturing waste is recycled. In 2007 alone, LEE Industries recycled 41,280 pounds of plastic; 141,060 pounds of fabric and upholstery material; 145,600 pounds of cardboard; 13,116 pounds of cotton; and 10,020 pounds of plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and paper.
      • LEE continues to incorporate new technologies to maximize fabric and leather yields.
      • LEE requires all vendors to have a Code of Conduct and adhere to those policies.

LEE’s love of furniture is contagious, and that is why they can’t resist creating the best upholstery product available, and it is all made in the USA! In four manufacturing facilities in North Carolina, they are able to employ over 670 skilled associates that create one-of-a-kind products.

Since quality is paramount to LEE, they believe that their product is given an edge because they are with it 100% of the way through manufacturing. For example, the driftwood finish requires nine steps to complete, and you can be assured that the person behind making that finish perfect is being held accountable for each and every application.

Even with a global supply network, 98% of the components in their products are supplied domestically, and most suppliers are in their home state of North Carolina. This includes the frames, foam, springs, cotton ticking, decking, fabrics, and packaging. Local suppliers mean local employment and reduced transportation costs, and CO2 emissions.

LEE has always manufactured in the USA, and if they were to sell 16 more sofas per week, they would be able to hire 5 new LEE associates, sell 160 more, and we could have 50 new hires at LEE. Proudly MADE IN THE USA!

      Customizing Your Furniture
      March 16, 2021

Here at Saybrook Home, we know that furniture is not “one style fits all” and we take great care in creating special, one-of-a-kind custom pieces that are made specifically for you and your lifestyle. We have the ability to build your piece from the joints up so that your product, whether it’s a bed, sofa, console table, or nightstand, not only looks like it was made with your home in mind but actually was! From the big details, such as picking out fabrics and sizes and finishes, to the smaller ones, like what arm style would be best on your sofa or what nailhead you’d like on your chair, we’re here to make an overwhelming process easy and simple, so instead of it being a project, it becomes a joy. Our talented team of designers is ready and available to make this process as seamless and fun for you as possible.

      THE PROCESS

When furnishing a room, it’s important to keep in mind your room’s size and what type of pieces you want to fill it with. If you decide on a sectional sofa, we can layout the piece to fit your space perfectly. Whether standard sectional size or slightly larger or smaller, we can add or subtract seats on either side to custom build what you need. Once we have the size and shape decided on, we can choose from nine base styles, nine arm styles, five back styles, and two seating depths. You can make any statement with your upholstery and frame selection, from timelessly traditional to sleek metropolitan to family-room casual. Do you need a fabric that’s more family and pet-friendly? Do you prefer a bold fabric to stand out or a functional leather to best suit your needs? Consider your lifestyle and how you will be using your custom furniture pieces to choose the best custom options available.

Decorative Treatments also play a huge role in your upholstered pieces’ overall look. Legs, skirts, bandings, contrast welts, and fringes can all be incorporated into your final design to truly help elevate the final product. Contrast and accent pillows can also be completely custom with your choice of contrasting welt, brush fringes, rope welts, and decorative tapes. If you’re picking out dressers, bookcases, or table pieces, choose the wood finish, paint type, and hardware to match your heirlooms or complement your existing furniture. Your final room design is all about those details!

      THE TIME

Although special-ordered furniture may take longer to receive than buying furniture off the floor, the wait time is well worth it. Don’t settle for a furniture piece “that’ll do” or is “close enough.” If you’re going to be investing in these high-quality, American-made pieces, you should be getting exactly what you want! Our vendors specifically make each piece FOR you, so you know the care and thought are behind your build.

Once your furniture has arrived, we at Saybrook Home offer white-glove furniture delivery to all corners of CT as well as some border towns in MA, NY, and RI. We manage our own fleet of trucks and staff to ensure you receive the same high-quality service from the beginning to the end of your experience. We can also arrange reputable 3rd party delivery services can be arranged for areas outside of our serviceable area, and offer removal services upon delivery of new furniture. Ask your salesperson for details!

        Decorating with Monograms
        March 11, 2021

Like almost everything regarding furniture and design, it’s all about the details. Monogramming is a historic practice that was originally invented to act as a signature on art, insignia, and coins. Nowadays, we tend to see them more on home decor, luggage tags, clothing, or jewelry. It’s an age-old classic that’s evolved and been perfected with time. Whether embroidered or screen printed, monograms are a simple way to upscale and personalize nearly any item. Not only do they make a statement but they make YOUR statement. Once you figure out the best way to personalize the monogram that fits you (or maybe a friend as a wedding or baby shower gift!), the options are absolutely endless!

        MONOGRAM STYLES

Whether you’re monogramming your name or your and your partner’s names, these are the most commonly used layouts!

        MONOGRAM PLACEMENT

Monogrammed items are special-ordered due to their custom nature, and we do have various single-letter monogram items in-store! Whether on a cutting board, hand towel, or blanket, monograms are the most effective way to transform your new items into your treasured family heirlooms.

          Curated Creators: Frank & Eileen
          March 3, 2021

Frank & Eileen is a woman-owned, women-led, and mother-approved wardrobe business that focuses on empowering women while supplying ethical and sustainable clothing. Born in 2009, Frank & Eileen was created by a former engineer Audrey McLoghlin who sought to reinvent the button-up for women—a category previously focused solely on men. Inspired by Audrey’s Irish grandparents—their brand namesakes, Frank & Eileen—they have grown slowly and intentionally from their best-Italian-fabric-in-the-world-obsessed beginnings. Now a globally recognized fashion brand, Frank & Eileen’s mission is to model and support female entrepreneurship as a force for good—all from their family-friendly HQ in sunny California.

Thanks to Oprah’s O List back in 2016, our Apparel Shop Buyer, Donna, ordered her own Grayson shirt per the list of favorites. From her first wear, she knew, “this is a brand we need to carry.” More often than not, we at Saybrook Home experience a positive interaction with brands outside of the store and want to bring them into the store to share with everyone else!

Saybrook Home is one of only eleven stores in the state of Connecticut that carries Frank & Eileen clothing, and we are consistently excited and eager for each new arrival. Frank & Eileen clothing pieces are unique, comfortable, and sustainable from start to finish.

          Grasping Grandmillennial
          February 24, 2021

It’s no secret that the hottest new interior design trend includes your family’s heirlooms and antiques instead of modern, matching furniture pieces. There’s absolutely a tasteful way to mix old with new while incorporating bold floral patterns with classic china. This Grandmillennial style is the epitome of the effortlessly put-together design. Chinoiserie vibes and childhood remembrances make this style so attractive in 2021!

There are no written rules on what you can and can’t include in your final design, but we at Saybrook Home have a few tips and tricks up our sleeves to help you achieve the final design you’re looking for!

One of the key ingredients to a successful home design is adding bold and unique patterns to your walls, window treatments, tablecloths, upholstered furniture fabrics, and rugs. However, you don’t want to mix too many patterns to compete with each other! Pick a common color, or color scheme, to include in every pattern so that even though they may seem contrasting, they’re really layered and coordinating. Plaids, toile, and other floral patterns are the best for avoiding a disorganized pairing.

Since this design style includes antiques, there’s no matching rule! Use the broken-up dish set you have to compliment the new set of tabletop linens you want to display, or use your great-grandmother’s end table to decide what wood and finish you want for your new coffee table! This style is all about your personality, so have fun with it!

One of the newest home trends is Needlepoint! While we were all home for quarantine, new hobbies like baking banana bread and completing puzzles became highly popular because they didn’t include social media sites and technology. Alongside those hobbies, needlepoint has also become an obsession. The mindless activity is “meditative” and relaxing and doubles as home decor or functional accessories once completed! Even if you don’t want to stitch on your own, a huge ingredient of the Grandmillenial style is Needlepoint; whether in your pillows, rugs, ottomans, or wall decor form.

Chinoiserie has been around for centuries, and the Asian-influenced decor isn’t going anywhere! Chinoiserie is a wonderful accent to include in home designs and comes in many forms and colors. The most popular today are porcelain and ceramic jars, vases, tea sets, and more. The blue and white patterns originally debuted on functional ginger jars but are used today on decorative pieces in all forms.

Grandmillenial Interior Design may seem like a new trend, but it actually comes from an age-old desire for comfort, history, and craftsmanship. We at Saybrook Home believe your home decor should tell a story, and this movement is the perfect way to achieve just that. Nostalgia and quality are easy to obtain while incorporating modern statements and emotional connections into your home.

              Furnishing a Small Space
              February 11, 2021

Oftentimes, historical homes in New England come with the lovely charm and character that’s so sought after, but that means they also come with their traditional floor plan of smaller sized rooms instead of a modern open floor plan. Small rooms may be daunting when it comes to decorating, but there’s nothing to be afraid of! Smaller rooms mean cozier rooms, and we at Saybrook Home can share some tricks of the trade to help turn the smallest of rooms into the most enticing and functional part of your home.

              MULTI-USE PIECES
When shopping for furniture, look for pieces with hidden or visible storage that can hide everyday necessities that aren’t appealing to the eye. Obviously, using too many furniture pieces will look cluttered with limited space, and too-large furniture pieces will look out of place. Find that happy medium of pieces to maximize your space while looking like a magazine spread. Utilize small storage spaces like ottomans, lidded baskets, and end tables that you would use for your decor anyway!

              TOO-BULKY PIECES
Don’t go for an upholstered armchair with a high back, no matter how comfortable it may be! The height of the back and added width from the arms will make the chair appear larger than it actually is in a small room. If there’s a walkway behind the chair, it may also block off the rest of your space with its height. Opt for an accent chair with a low back or no arms to make maneuvering around it easy and look like it fits perfectly in its space.

              USE GLASS
It’s no secret that mirrors are great for decor but also for redistributing light! Add mirrors to your walls to make your room feel larger than it actually is while adding a pop of glam. Also, opt for glass coffee or end tables to make your room feel bigger with fewer dark or heavy-material furniture pieces. Whether on your walls or floor, glass is a great material to avoid cluttering a room.

              LITTLE CLUTTER
Speaking of clutter, you’ve always heard the phrase…LESS IS MORE! You want to approach your decor attentively in a small space so that it doesn’t feel overwhelming or messy. This is why multi-use storage pieces are so critical to hide everyday necessities. Small spaces can’t handle as much clutter and larger rooms or open floor plans, so definitely keep your knickknacks and smaller decor items to a minimum.

              KEEP WALKWAYS IN MIND

Just like in any room, be sure to think about your traffic flow! Opt for pieces that won’t block doorways or won’t cause a passerby to turn sideways to pass. Use your floorplan to make a note of important doors, hallways, and even windows. A room that feels closed off or literally unenterable will feel unwelcoming.
